What are Tack, Adhesion, Cohesion, and Keying of Adhesive Tapes?

2024-09-20

The practical adhesive properties of tack, adhesion, cohesion, and keying in pressure-sensitive adhesive products and their relationship are their most important and basic properties. When researching and manufacturing pressure-sensitive adhesives and various products, the requirements of these basic properties must be considered and met first.

1-Tack

Also called quick adhesion, it refers to the ability to resist separation when the adhesive surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive product contacts the surface of the adherend with very light pressure and separates immediately and quickly. The feel of adhesion when you touch the pressure-sensitive adhesive surface with your fingers and immediately remove it.

2-Adhesion

Refers to the ability to resist separation of the adhesive interface between the pressure-sensitive adhesive product and the adherend surface after bonding with appropriate external pressure and time.

3-Cohesion

Refers to the cohesion of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer itself in the pressure-sensitive amine adhesive product, that is, the ability of the pressure-sensitive amine adhesive layer to resist damage due to external forces. The ability of the pressure-sensitive amine product to resist shear creep damage under persistent shear after bonding with appropriate external force and time, that is, shear creep retention (adhesion retention).

4-Keying

Refers to the bonding force between the pressure-sensitive amine adhesive and the substrate, or between the pressure-sensitive amine adhesive and the primer, and between the primer and the substrate. The peel strength value measured when the adhesive layer and the substrate are completely separated during the animal strength test of the pressure-sensitive adhesive product can be regarded as the size of the keying force. Under normal circumstances, the keying force of the pressure-sensitive adhesive product is greater than the bonding force, so this value cannot be measured.

In practical pressure-sensitive amine products, the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape is supplied in a reel shape, and the pressure-sensitive adhesive at this time is pasted on the back of the substrate for protection: the pressure-sensitive adhesive in the pressure-sensitive amine adhesive sheet is pasted on the release paper or the release film for protection. When using, you must first unwind the reel of the pressure-sensitive amine tape or peel off the release paper (or film).

Therefore, the bonding force between the pressure-sensitive adhesive and the back of the substrate or the release paper (or film) is also one of the important practical bonding properties of pressure-sensitive adhesive products. This kind of adhesive performance is generally measured by the unwinding force test of the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape or the peeling force test of the pressure-sensitive adhesive on the release paper (or film).
